A viewing and receiving of friends will be held from 2-4 PM, Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson, with a Eulogy by family and friends at 4 PM. Funeral services and interment will be held Thursday February 5, 2015 at 10AM at Arlington National Cemetery as she is put to rest with her husband, Master Sergeant Albert W. Dilworth, United States Marine Corps (Retired)
Bea Dilworth was born in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, February 1, 1921, to the late Charles E. Jackson and Hannah Wynn. She grew up in Dundalk and, for several years, in Western Maryland, before graduating from High School in 1939.
On Christmas Day, 1941, she married her husband of the next 70 years, Al, and spent the next 13 years with the Marine Corps, the strong military wife behind the successful man. During this time she quickly adapted to the Corps and supported her husband in a multitude of ways, and, in 1943, her new daughter, Joyce, as her husband was Stateside training new Marines for duty in World War 2 . When Al was reassigned for training for the invasion of Okinawa, Japan, Bea and Joyce returned to Baltimore where they resided until the end of the war. Bea’s last posting with the Corps was in Copenhagen , Denmark, from 1954-1956, with the newly built and recently opened US Embassy, where Al supervised the Marine Security Delegation of the Embassy and Bea actively participated in Embassy social and cultural activities while serving as a second mother to many of the single Marines providing security.
In 1957, the family moved to a home in Dundalk where Bea would raise her daughter and take care of her husband after his retirement from the Marine Corps and his integration into the civilian work force. Once Joyce was well on her way to graduating from High School, Bea decided to do something different and became a very skilled PBX (phone switchboard) operator, initially at Church Home and Hospital and later, eventually retiring after 20 years from the City of Baltimore Department of Education.
Bea was a member of the Graceland Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She and Al were involved in all aspects of the church but especially enjoyed participating in the preparation of the periodic church dinners where Al directed and supervised the kitchen staff while Bea and others did the cooking. She was, undoubtedly, the most successful salesperson for church fund raisers. Bea is also remembered by many for her excellent cookies and fantastic cheesecakes.
Bea really enjoyed the Marine Corps and the military lifestyle and for more than four decades after his retirement she and Al were very active in more than a dozen veterans service organizations and were Charter Members and contributors to The Marine Corps Museum.
Bea was a loving wife and mother and her kindness, selflessness, generosity and patriotism will be missed by all.
Bea was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles and Stuart Jackson, sister Evelynne Schafer, and her husband Albert.
She is survived by her daughter Joyce Cain and husband Jim of West Jefferson and several nieces and nephews scattered across America, including Clark Wills, with whom she had a special relationship.
