Mr. George Albert Burgess, age 89, of West Jefferson passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 29, 2015 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Perry Miller and Rev. Ken Morris officiating. A private burial will be held at Calloway Cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 9:00-11:00am on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, two hours prior to the funeral service. Mr. Burgess was born in Ashe County on September 11, 1925 to the late George Oscar and Golda Miller Burgess. George served in the United States Navy. He was owner and operator of Parker & Burgess Reality until 1996 when his son Mike took over the business. He was an active member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church since 1940. George was a member of the Lion's Club. He enjoyed playing golf and watch sports on television. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Isabel Marsh Burgess; a brother, Robert Burgess; a sister, Shirley Roten. Mr. Burgess is survived by a son, Mike Burgess and wife, Mary (Mrs. Mert), of West Jefferson; a brother, Wayne Burgess and wife, Becky, of West Jefferson; three sisters, Maude Shatley, of West Jefferson, Hazel Barbour, of Burlington and Rose Cook and husband, John of Boone; two granddaughters, Ashley and Katie Burgess, both of Asheville; three great-granddogs, Gilly, Boo and Daisy; several nieces and nephews also survive.
