Mrs. Wilcox was born in Poole, Maryland on June 30, 1930 to the late Russell and Ardna Hart Buchanan. She retired from Southern Devices after 21 years. She was a member of Whitetop Park Baptist Church. Betty was a loving mother, grandmother and sister; she will be missed by all.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Coy David Wilcox; a son, Larry Wilcox; a brother, Franklin Buchanan; four sisters, Elizabeth Buchanan, Jennie Buchanan, Barbara Buchanan and Grace Ann Stamper.
She is survived by two sons, David Wilcox and wife, Katina, of Crumpler and Curtis Wilcox, of Lansing; a daughter, Robin Johnson and husband, Jimmy, of Millers Creek; two brothers, James L. Buchanan of Rockville, Maryland and Scotty William Buchanan, of Whitetop, Virginia; three sisters, Lillian Ilean Hancock, of Radford, Virginia, Norma Stansberry, of Lansing and Katie Pennington, of Damascus, Virginia; three granddaughters; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Betty Wilcox was a woman who loved the Lord and it was shown in everything she did in her life. She was a loving mother who always put others before herself. Betty always had a kind word for everyone and showed God's compassion in the way she treated others and lived her life. She was always gentle in word and spirit. No matter what kind of day she was having, or how she felt, she was always more concerned about others' needs more than her own. Betty saw everyone else as being in worse shape than she was and worried about helping those "poor people" and said it was "more blessed to give than receive."
Being the oldest of nine children, there were times when Betty would go without to make sure everyone else got to eat. In her mind she didn't matter, and everyone else was more important. She always took care of her own children and in later years her mother, Ardna. She felt it was an honor to care for others, in the same way Jesus cares for us.
Betty loved animals, no matter what kind, but her favorite was cats. Any stray that lived nearby learned if it was hungry it just needed to show up at her doorstep to be fed. When people asked her about taking care of those stray animals she would say "well, they have to eat too, poor little cats."
Betty loved attending church when she was able. She always said church was the best place to go. We know now Betty is home with Jesus and has crowns to lay at his feet. The life she left behind her demonstrated the fruits of the spirit, and the three most valuable gifts Christ gave us: Faith, Hope, and Charity. And the greatest of these was the love for Jesus we saw shining out of Betty's eyes in her grace, mercy, and compassion she had for those around her.
The family will be meeting at 200 Luther Road, Apt 127 in Jefferson.
