Mr. Vernie Church, age 87, of Jefferson, the Phoenix Creek Community, died Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Riley Blevins and Rev. Scott Courtney officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00am on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service. Mr. Church was born in Ashe County on Saturday, March 25, 1922 to the late James Moore Church and Effie Mae Brooks Church. He worked 22 years as a supervisor at Midway Lumber. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Verna Shatley Church on June 18, 2004. Mr. Church is survived by two daughters, Lena Neaves and husband, Claude, of Jefferson and Marlene Pardue and husband, Mark, of Sparta; two brothers, Clifford Church of Lansing and Richard Church of Wilkesboro; a sister, Beulah Blevins of Lansing; three grandchildren, Randy Neaves and wife, June, Keith Neaves and Ethan Pardue; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Sydney and Mariah; several nieces and nephews also survive.
