Patty, Carolyn, Bradley and T.A.,
I am saddened to learn recently of Al Jr.'s death. I have many fond memories of times spent with him, Uncle Al, Aunt Ruth and Ruth Powell in many years past at the Wheeler family reunions, the annual Wheeler Christmas gatherings and other impromptu visits. He was a very dear "first cousin". Patty, since I have also lost my husband (2 1/2 years ago), I can empathize with the grief you are now experiencing. Dear Wheeler Family,
Please accept my sympathy at the loss of your patriarch. I met Mr. Wheeler, (I knew him as Al), when he ran for a seat in the General Assembly. He made several trips to Stokes County and impressed me with his intelligence, charm, and dignity. Despite our efforts, we could not send him to Raleigh. I admire him for his courage and conviction.

Al Wheeler was one of the most kindest and gracious persons we have ever met, and it was genuine. In his younger years he was an officer in the Strategic Air Command, an elite group of the U.S. Air Force. He never talked about it. Al had a way of making folks feel at ease when they were around him, a rare gift. There was nothing phony about Al; what you saw was what you got, and it was wonderful! He will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Patty.

Dear Patty.
Just recently I ask Don Saunders to send me Al's address- we heard he was not well and in a skilled nursing facility in Jefferson. Al was a lovely man - and he will be missed by many. He certainly suffered over the last many years. May he rest in peace. Patty our prayers and sympathy are certainly with you as you grieve and learn to go on with your life. You have many friends who will love and support you. We have completed a very labor intensive downsizing and relocation to Arbor Acres in WS. We will not be able to be with you at this time. Please know we will be there in spirit.
