Obituary of Mary Nell Marsh

Mary Nell Houck Marsh, 92, of Mooresville, NC (formerly of Boone, NC) died on December 11th at Lake Norman Regional Hospital following a short illness. She was born on May 28, 1923 in Ashe County to Gerna Park Houck and Flora Gentry Houck. After graduating from West Jefferson High School, Mary Nell trained to be a nurse at Davis School of Nursing in Statesville. She worked in a variety of medical settings before finishing her career as the nursing supervisor for the Watauga County Health Department. Mary Nell was a faithful and active member of Boone United Methodist Church before moving to Mooresville to be closer to family. During her retirement, Mary Nell traveled, wrote an extensive family history, and enjoyed the many flowers she knew as well and nurtured in her yard. Mary Nell was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Darwin Marsh, whom she married and nursed following injuries he sustained during WWII. Together they had three children, Mary Darwin Marsh Moore (Wylie) of Granite Falls, Ellen Marsh Geitner (Eric) of Hickory and John Barclay Marsh (Debbie) of Mooresville for whom they set an extraordinary example of service to one's community and devotion to one's family. They were blessed with 6 grandchildren, Andrew Moore (Debbie) of Belmont, Amanda Stroupe (Scott) of Granite Falls, Kennedy Geitner of Hickory, Jake Geitner (Jenna) of Asheville, Patrick Marsh (Jill), of Waco, TX, Jordan Marsh of Harrisburg and 8 great-grandchildren. Mary Nell is also survived by a sister, Glenna "Johnnie" Webb of Ellerbee, NC and is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. The family will receive visitors at Mary Nell's Mooresville home at 904 Fieldstone Road from 3 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, December 15th. A small graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 16th at 1:00pm at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery in Baldwin, NC (Ashe County). In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Bethany Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 Hwy 194 South, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
