Obituary of Agnes Baldwin
Agnes Baldwin died on January 21, 2016 in the Trauma Unit of Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Annie Houck of Baldwin, NC. She was preceded in death by several siblings. She is survived by one sister, Jackie Houck Jones of Winston Salem. After her mother’s death she lived with her aunt and uncle, Mack and Arbie Edwards of the Baldwin Community until her marriage. She was like an older sister to Jerrie Edwards Francis and Libby Edwards Reeves.
She married Jim Baldwin and worked alongside him in Baldwin Men’s Shop in West Jefferson. Mr. Baldwin was also the owner of Barr Insurance until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin traveled extensively with the W.J. Lion’s Club when Jim was District President and International Director. Mrs. Baldwin was a founding member of the Ladies Club of Mountain Aire Gold Course. She won many club championships and scored a hole-in-one at the age of 70! She was instrumental in teaching her cousin, Tatum Lemly, to play golf in his teen years.
Mrs. Baldwin was an avid gardener. She worked in her flower beds until she was 93. God forbid there was ever a WEED in HER flowers! She was an excellent cook, quilter and crocheting. She mastered any art activity that she attempted. Her home was a testimony to her arts and crafts abilities. She taught her young cousin, Hannah Lemly a love of art. Mrs. Baldwin was like a special grandmother to Michele Francis Lemly and the late Stephanie Francis Lemly. She taught them to ride bikes, play card games, drive a car, dance, cook, garden- and the beauty of a simple life. Unfortunately, she could never teach them her favorite game of golf!
Mrs. Baldwin is survived by several cousins, nephews, friends, and her beloved caregiver- and a pet cat, Whiskers.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Bethany Methodist Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 Highway 194 South, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
