Mr. James Ivan, Miller, Sr., age 101, of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Segraves Nursing Care Center. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 2pm at the Ashelawn Mausoleum with Rev. Billy Robinson officiating. Entombment will follow the service. Mr. Miller was born on March 22, 1908 in the Hemlock Community of Ashe County to John Franklin Miller and Rosa Adeline Graybeal Miller. He earned a BA degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served as educator, principal and superintendent for the Ashe County School System. Following his tenure in the school system, Mr. Miller was a sales representative for Kincaid Furniture Manufacturing Company from 1949-1984. He was also employed by Phoenix Chair Company, West Jefferson, NC; R.J. Reynolds, Winston-Salem, NC; Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipbuilding, Baltimore, MD; Federal Motor Trucking, Detroit, MI; and Carborundum Company, Niagara Falls, NY. Throughout his life, Mr. Miller and his wife, Edna, traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Africa, Mexico, Russia, the Caribbean and all 50 of the United States. He also enjoyed gardening and flowers. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Hinkle Miller; one son, J.I. Miller, Jr. of West Jefferson, NC; six grandchildren, Laura Ingrid Miller, of Weaverville, NC, Allison Ellen Miller, of Chapel Hill, NC, James Ivan Miller, III, of Orlando, FL, John Frank Miller, III, of Tupelo, MS, Stephen Miller Moring and Robert Hyde Moring, Jr., both of Miami, FL; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Frank Miller and a daughter, Judith Ray Lundgren.
