Obituary of Thelma Ruth Roten

Mrs. Thelma Ruth Thompson Roten, age 95, of Creston. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 3:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Graybeal and Rev. John Elledge officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery in Rich Hill Community. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017; two hours prior to the funeral service. Thelma was born in Ashe County, NC to Wesley and Florence Thompson on August 10, 1921. She was married to Charles Theadore (better known as Thead) Roten on December 22, 1939. They had two children, Shelby Jean Roten born February 16, 1941 and Jerry Lee Roten born June 18, 1946. Thelma was an only child. She lost her mother due to pneumonia when she was only seven years old. Her father never remarried and he raised Thelma alone. She had to learn to do a lot of things at a very early age. She would stand in a chair at the stove and help her daddy cook, by stirring the gravy. This led her to become an excellent cook. Her Sunday dinners were something that the entire family looked forward to for so many years. No one could make a butterscotch pie as good as hers. Thelma was a homemaker for many years. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved taking care of her children and home. She enjoyed working in her garden (with her big straw hat on, of course) and canning her vegetables. She also enjoyed her flowers. Later she went to work part time along with Thead in their family owned grocery store, Northwest Food Market. She sometimes ran the cash register and always made sure all the shelving and items on them were dust free. She enjoyed talking with their many customers. She enjoyed family gatherings, and looked forward to the visits and boxes of candy from her grandchildren. Thead and Thelma lived in the Rich Hill Community of Ashe County for most of their lives except for approximately five years that they lived in Maryland. They loved their community and their family and friends. Thelma was a member of Rich Hill Baptist Church for many years. After Thead died in June of 1995, Thelma continued living in her home on Rich Hill for several years. Then due to declining health she went to live with her daughter, Shelby. Shelby and her husband, Jack lovingly provided excellent care for her in their home for many years, until her health and theirs deteriorated, at which time she went to Ashe Assisted Living and Memory Care. She lived there for thirteen months. The staff there, along with the staff of Medi Home Hospice, provided excellent care for her. She went home to the Lord on April 27, 2017. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Shelby and her husband, Jack Eastridge, of Warrensville; her son Jerry and wife, Margie Roten, of West Jefferson; her grandson, Jimmy Eastridge, of Jefferson; her granddaughter, Tyler Roten, of Wilkesboro. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 421, Jefferson or Ashe Assisted Living Memory Care, 180 Chatty Rob Lane, West Jefferson, NC 28694. The family will be meeting at the home of Jerry and Margie Roten at 611 Clarence Lyalls Road in West Jefferson.
