Samuel Lyda Halsey (83) of Jefferson, NC, passed away Friday, December 1, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. His family was by his side. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 2:00 pm, Grassy Creek United Methodist Church, with Rev. Harold Parks, David VanHoy, and Rev. Russell Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery with military and masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, December 4, 2017 at Boone Family Funeral Home. Sam Halsey was born September 13, 1934 in Statesville, NC, to John R. and Flossye Halsey. Mr. Halsey, a veteran, served in the U.S. Army as part of a helicopter crew. He married Peggy Ashley in 1959. He started businesses in both Alleghany and Ashe Counties. His first business endeavor was Quality Tire Service in Sparta, NC. He operated a large farm in Piney Creek during that same time. In 1977, he purchased Twin-City Chevrolet in Ashe County. After selling both his Chevrolet and Chrysler dealerships in 1987, he opened a Sears store in West Jefferson, NC plus became a realtor/broker before finally retiring in 2008. Sam attended Grassy Creek Methodist Church. He was also a generous philanthropist supporting many local causes throughout the years. Sam was appointed by the governor and served on the NC Board of Transportation from 2009 until 2013. In addition, he chaired the Board of Education in Alleghany County and served on the board of directors for First Citizens Bank in Ashe and Alleghany Counties. Mr. Halsey was a proud 32nd degree Mason Lodge #594 and a member of the Ashe County Shrine Club. Survivors left to cherish his memory are: Spouse, Peggy Ashley Halsey, Jefferson, NC Wife of 58 years; Sister, Alice Marie Sturgill, Piney Creek, NC; Children: Sharon McLaughlin and her husband Kevin of Indialantic, FL, Dr. Brenda Halsey and her husband Joe Costner, Jr. of Rock Hill, SC, Charles Halsey and his wife Stacy of Statesville, NC, and Patricia Brinegar and her husband Steve of Jefferson, NC. Grandchildren, Michael Brinegar and wife Savannah of Crumpler, NC, Eric Greeson of Morrisville, NC, Lauren Brinegar, of Winston-Salem, NC, Scott Greeson of Greenville, NC, Evan Halsey of Hickory, NC and Matt Halsey of Statesville, NC. Step-Grandchildren, Ryan McLaughlin and wife Jennifer of Hermosa Beach, CA, Alex Costner of St. Augustine, FL, Conor McLaughlin of Charlotte, NC, Blake Costner of Rock Hill, SC, Jaxson Halsey of Statesville, NC and Wyatt Foster of Statesville, NC. Sister-in-law, Betty Fritz, Archdale, NC, Sister-in-law Ollie Harless and her husband Larry of West Jefferson, NC. The family requests no food please.
