Obituary of Terry Morgan Grubb

Mr. Terry Morgan Grubb, age 65, of West Jefferson, passed away Monday February 12, 2018 in the comfort of his home and with his cherished dog, Aggie, nearby.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1:00pm at Laurel Knob Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Rash officiating. Burial will follow in the Stephens Cemetery with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Born (1953) in Jefferson, NC to the late Burl and Virginia Grubb, Terry was raised in Todd, NC and had a special connection to his home place throughout his life. A graduate of Elk Knob Elementary and Beaver Creek High School, he proudly served his country in the US Army during the late-Vietnam Era. Stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, it was there he met and married the love of his life, Peni Luft - with treasured daughter, Desiree, arriving soon after their return to America. Terry worked for much of his life in manufacturing but earned an associate degree in social work at Wilkes Community College in 2007.  Although brief due to his health, his work serving and advocating for the elderly at Margate Health & Rehab Center was the highlight of his working years and was truly his life calling.

In his younger days, Terry enjoyed fishing, particularly with his daughter. They shared numerous hours hunting night crawlers, traipsing through creeks, and sitting on the banks of the New River.  Terry had several life-long friends and acquired many more through his varied work experiences.  He was known as a practical joker but also had a reputation for being uplifting and kind to everyone he met.  He was a wonderful story-teller particularly when regaling others with tales from his youth.  He taught his daughter everything he knew about music (especially bluegrass and classic rock) and had a particular fondness for Creedence Clearwater Revival.  Terry was a compassionate caregiver to others and provided ongoing care to both of his parents when they became ill as well as becoming a full-time caregiver to his father-in-law during his final stages of cancer.  This experience was influential in Terry’s becoming a volunteer with Hospice, something he and his wife shared together until his health no longer allowed.   In his later years, he became quite the social media user.  He enjoyed keeping in touch with family and loved ones and was able to reconnect with many friends from long ago.  He provided frequent encouragement to others online, particularly his daughter by sending her a daily private message or two filled words of encouragement, updates from home, or simply funny animal videos and memes.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Steven Randall Grubb. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Peni Luft Grubb of West Jefferson, NC; his daughter Desiree Grubb Barr and son-in-law Ricky Barr of Chicago, IL; a brother Jerry Grubb of Todd, NC and a brother Barry Grubb (Kay) of Newland, NC.  Two special nieces, Tara Johnson of Ashville, NC and Michele Stiller (Ward) of Lake Charles, LA also survive.

Terry’s final resting place will be beside his beloved father at Stephens Cemetery in Todd, NC with his wife to join his side upon her passing.

Memorial gifts may be made to Laurel Knob Baptist Church, where Terry was a lifelong member. Words of comfort or sympathy can be sent directly to the family at 488 Oakwood Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
