Mrs. Dorothy Helen Hess, age 88, of West Jefferson passed away Friday morning, June 29, 2018 at her home. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at 4:00pm at Mt. Paddy Church with Rev. Tim Roten and Pastor Larry Teague officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00pm on Sunday, July 1, 2018; one hour prior to the memorial service. Mrs. Hess was born in Russell County, VA on August 14, 1929 to the late Luther and Myrtle Harris Hess. She worked in a shoe manufacturing plant. Dorothy worked as a Foster Grandparent for many years. She recorded an album "In Memory of her Mother" in the late 70's of folk songs and gospel hymns. She was a loving mother and grandmother; she will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Henry Hess; two brothers, Clarence Hess and Arba Lee Hess; two sisters, Thelma Miller and Lucille Hess and a special friend, Walter Bowers. Mrs. Hess is survived by a son, Gary Hess and wife, Mary, of West Jefferson; a daughter, Anita May and husband, Ned, of Zionsville; a sister, Iris Eury, of Denver, NC; three brothers, Edward Hess, of Wise, VA, Luther Hess, of Newton, NC and Roger Hess, of Princeton, WV; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
