Virginia Long Stallings, 80, passed away Friday, August 17th at home with her family after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Virginia was born at home in Ashe County during a snowstorm on January 28, 1938 to Grace Wyatt Long and William George Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rox Drum Stallings. Surviving to cherish her memory are her daughters, Debra Helms Scott and Patricia Helms Ginocchio and husband Louis, Grandchildren Stevens Haywood Scott, jr and wife Emily, Virginia Scott Van Rensselaer and husband David and Grayson Winter Ginocchio; sisters Marjorie Long Brown and Carol Long Bowers and husband Bill; brother Clayton Long and wife Sarah Dean; and precious great granddaughter Leona Grace Scott. She will be greatly missed by all. Virginia attended Appalachian State College , where she met her first husband, Walter Helms. She later graduated from Central Piedmont Community College. She worked as a nurse at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Her main joy came from being an excellent mother and homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and magnificent gardener. Every home she lived in was beautifully landscaped. She loved to read and collect cookbooks from around the country and world. After retirement, she and her husband Rox traveled the world extensively. The enjoyed international cruises and usually planned two to three trips a year. Deeply religious, Virginia studied the bible and took bible classes for years. She was a member of Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am at Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am with Reverend Sidney Crunk. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Church in Glendale Springs.
