To our family -
Martha was a real fighter in her battle with that "damn" disease. Her faith and hope were very inspiring to all of us. She gave light to all as is so vivid in her paintings. She was always energetic and outgoing to everyone. Whenever you were with Martha, it was always about "you", and how special "you" were. She had a way of making you feel as if you were the most important person in the world, just as she did the subjects in her paintings. We will have Martha with us forever, in our hearts, and in her art. God be with each and everyone of you.
Love,
Burt & Sandra

At long last, the ordeal is over. My deepest regards and sympathy is with each of you. Cheerful to me at every opportunity, I will miss her very much. I'll never forget sitting for the bust she did of me for a sculpture class she was taking. It will and has always, reminded me of her and her wonderful laughter.
I love you all,

Family - I know that Mom and Auntie Martha, and Grandma & Grandpa are up in heaven, laughing, and talking, and probably eating one awesome feast - with Grandma's Chocolate Devils Food cake with Buttercream frosting. They are bragging about us, and telling stories and enjoying all that they lived for.
Martha fought a hard battle for a very long time, and now that the suffering is over she can start to enjoy again. Enjoy the smell of flowers, and the sunshine on her skin, and the fruits of her life.
Auntie Martha lives on in my house, (there are only 3 rooms that don't have the luxury of her paintings in them) she brings sun into my house and life on even the gloomiest days. Her spirit will shine on in all of us!
I cannot even begin to describe the love I have for her, and for the rest of my family. God has blessed me with the love of a great faimly!

We want to let everyone know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Martha always made us feel so welcome when we came down to visit. Martha introduced me to sweet tea. She taught me that when life gives you lemons....you make sweet tea. I will remember her friendly ways, smiles, and of course, her beautiful art work. God bless.

Hal, Wiley, Jodi and Family,
Two daisies as a gift for our wedding, a big red daliah celebrating our anniversary, a dirt road curving through the autumn forest just for fun, Martha’s art will stay in our home and her memory will stay in our hearts. The little lady with a big voice, a wonderful laugh and a great heart is greatly missed.
Our deepest condolences, Pat & Alice

Martha was the woman who shows us that SOME of us are able to be bigger than life...by treating the simple yet fleeting parts of life with the steadfast attention that causes each part to open its bud to reveal its deeper nature. From farming to raising a family, cooking, designing wallpaper, painting, hostessing: I am proud to have been in some of those gardens!
Love, Jennifer Gardiner

Auntie Martha was one of my summertime moms. Cruising town with my cousins, eating healthy foods, staying up late with scary movies and playing up at the lake, respresents a gift to me in the form of incredible memories. Martha's spirit is alive in my home through her beautiful paintings I have the honor of enjoying every day. There is no question her spirit and passion for life has touched anyone who knew her. I send hugs and comfort to my beloved NC family. Love you - Trac

I am so saddened to hear of Martha's passing.I have such good memories of working at Omni Farm in the early 1970's. I feel like Martha went out of her way to make me feel comfortable. She even found a place for me to live.I will always smile at the great delight she took in greeting Wiley--"Hey Sugarman". If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

i am holding such sweet memories of Martha in my heart. She introduced me to Jack and encouraged our relationship that has resulted in 31 years of marriage. Martha and Hal were amazing community organizers with weekly volleyball games and employment for anyone willing to work. We learned so much from them. i remember staying in their house one Christmas season when i was pregnant with Zach. A relief from going to Atlanta! In my living room hangs a painting of a Hibiscus that Martha painted that helps me remember my dear friend, Martha. Martha never called me Denise --she along with a few friends know me as my family name Denny Lou.
