Obituary of Herbert Wyatt Barr

Mr. Herbert Wyatt Barr, age 89, of Piney Creek passed away Sunday morning, October 14, 2018 at Pruitt Health Care & Rehab in Elkin. A graveside service with military rites will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 2:00pm at Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Peter Parish officiating. The family will receive friends after the graveside services in the church fellowship hall. Mr. Barr was born in Alleghany County on October 23, 1928 to the late Walter Raleigh and Hattie Wyatt Barr. He served in the United States Army. He was owner and operator of Baker's Ridge Salvage. At one time his salvage yard was the oldest and largest in Alleghany County; from that prospective he was instrumental in the proposal of Alleghany County land use guidelines for the operation of salvage yards. Herbert also enjoyed farming, welding and mechanic work. He had many talents. He was a loving father and grandfather; he will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Caudill Barr on March 17, 2018. They were married on October 23, 1954. Mr. Barr is survived by a daughter, Peggy Parish and husband Peter, of Piney Creek; a granddaughter, Melinda Parish of Oak Ridge, TN; several nieces and nephews also survive.
