John A. Weaver, Jr. was known as "The Apple Man" at Forest Ridge Assisted Living, his home for the past six years. He loved traveling to Wilkes County, eating at Chick-fil-a and buying apples and sharing with his 'clients' at Forest Ridge and with many friends and visitors who came to visit him. He loved to watch sports on TV and take part in the "Football Pools" with his family until he was 97 years old. His life was filled with the joy of love from his wife and children and grandchildren.
John was born on August 27, 1920 in West Jefferson to John A., Sr. and Clyde Faw Weaver. He attended West Jefferson Elementary and High Schools; graduated in 1938. He was a very active athlete and in High School played basketball and football. He received the very first "Best Sportsman Award" ever given by Ashe County. His entire life followed the pattern of doing his very best in every way in every thing he attempted. He attended Draughn Business College in Winston-Salem until he volunteered for the U.S. Air Force in 1940. He served four years, seven months and five days in the military and received his Honorable Discharge.
The he returned to Ashe to help his father with farming and cattle production. He later accepted a position with Sears Roebuck in High Point. While working there he furthered his education at Kings Business College in Greensboro, while Jeannie taught school. John, Jr. and Jeannie Hoppers of Alleghany County were married on June 5, 1948. Returning to Ashe County, John joined his father in the construction business and in 1955 he was appointed RFD mail carrier for the West Jefferson Route2, which covered 74 miles per day. He received the "Million Mile" award for his diligence and dedicated service. One of the things his family and friends enjoyed about visits with John, Jr. was his remarkable memory of West Jefferson and events and people who dwelt here during the past nearly one hundred years. His father contributed the land on which the First Baptist Church in West Jefferson was built, and John Jr. and Jeannie spent many years attending the church and loved being a part of the church family. He was the oldest member of the West Jefferson Baptist Church. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and he and Jeannie were known to travel many miles to watch their grandchildren as they participated in sports and other school functions. He was very sad when Jeannie passed away in 2015, after 67 years of marriage, but he maintained his lifestyle of enjoying friends and family while living at Forest Ridge.
John Jr. is survived by a daughter, Shonean Shatley (J.R.) of West Jefferson; a son, John A. Weaver, III, (Alice) of Bristol, TN. Also surviving: six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Imajean Hoppers Weaver; two brothers, Tom Weaver and Edwin Weaver; three sisters, Dorene Angeles, Babe Crouse and Jupe Granger
In his death, as in his life, he fought the good fight til the very end and we now celebrate the good life that John Andrew Weaver, Jr. led and will carry it on in our hearts.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers of Forest Ridge Assisted Living, Ashe Memorial Hospital
