When we lived in Georgia, Daddy bought me a real bike. I was five. It was teal and white...a flyer, banana seat...a little girls dream. The bike seemed so big. Daddy told me I was ready for a big bike. I believed in him...but not in myself, really. I was afraid.
Daddy took us to the armory guard, inside the gymnasium was so huge. He showed me how to get on the bike, how to stop, etc. Then, I was in the thing, pedaling for dear life, and I was not falling over. I was so excited! When I looked back to see where dad was, he was running along behind me, holding my seat steady.
So, I wasn’t afraid anymore . Then I looked back again, smiling, but dad was standing , watching...and I was riding by myself! He had this huge grin on his face. Then, he yelled at me to turn, because I was getting ready to run into the wall...
That day, dad taught me so much , about life, about being a parent. You gotta hold on and help sometimes. You gotta let go, and let them fall sometimes. Mostly, you just have to love.

My husband and I became acquainted with John in 1976 when he built our house in Lansing. Our daughter was only three, and he and Joe spoiled her when we would go check on the house. He was a special person and we we glad to know him. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are sent to all the family.

I first met John in 2014. He talked to me as if we had known each other all our lives. I knew from the first visit that I had made a great friend. He came to me to help with his VA activities and had faith that I could get the job done for him. Sometimes, he came in just to talk. Those were the best visits. Always happy and always good for a joke. And the ones he told me were loo loo's. I sincerely loved that man and everything he stood for. Honest, loving, caring man to the end. I shed a tear with every thought of John and, in this life, never seeing his smiling face again. I know he is with God and at peace. I bet him and Joe are just laughing it up right now. Happy, healthy and full of life. It's a sad day for all who knew John but a happier place in heaven since his arrival. He will be missed greatly! God speed John. My life is SO much better having had you as my friend!!
