Mrs. Sibyl Bare Dancy Leland, age 90, of Jefferson, died Thursday night, September 10, 2009 at Hillview Family Care Center in Todd, NC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dean K. Boshart officiating. Interment will follow in the Dancy Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Saturday one hour prior to the memorial service. Mrs. Leland was born in Ashe County, NC Monday, May 5, 1919 to the late Alonzo Edward and Allie Sheets Bare. During World War II, she moved with her husband Gilbert W. Dancy and their young family to Newark, Delaware to work at Anita Hosiery making parachutes. After the war, Anita Hosiery became Avon Products corporate offices and shipping plant where she worked until she retired in 1976. She and her husband Gilbert moved back "home" to the family farm on Bare Creek Road in Jefferson, NC. Shortly thereafter, they were instrumental in founding the Mount Jefferson Church of the Nazarene in West Jefferson, NC. She was a charter member of the church and was honored by the denomination's General Assembly Mission Board for her work in missions. She was an avid reader and a member of Ashe County Friends of the Library prior to the onset of her lengthy illness. She was also a supporter of the Arts. Several years after Gilbert Dancy's death, Mrs. Leland met and married John Leland with whom she traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and around the world. Mrs. Leland was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years, Gilbert W. Dancy, husband of five years, John Leland, and great granddaughter Elaine Grace Boshart. She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Dancy Boshart and husband, Dean of Newark, DE; two sons, Rev. Kermit W. Dancy, retired Pastor Emeritus of Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church in West Jefferson, and wife Judy, and Dr. Conrad B. Dancy and wife Linda of Winter Springs, Fl; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
