I’m a first cousin of Wally. Because of a family dispute between our fathers, we hadn’t met until we were in High School at a dance. I taught him how to do the Polka & Hop Waltz. We used to exchange Christmas letters & phone calls but I hadn’t heard from him for several years I’m sorry that he passed without one more phone call. Rest In Peace Dr Weeds, as he often called himself. He also played a mean saxophone & often went to Germany to join in the bands. He was one fun, nice, guy. Cousin Elynor Skroch Ficken.

Mrs Skroch and family: My name is Vitus Kampa and I live in Whitehall Wisconsin. You have my deepest sympathy on the loss of Walter. I have spoken to Walter twice several years ago and found him to be a very nice man from my conversations. I believe that he and I were/are distant relatives as his mother was a Kampa. I also have a another connection about Walter in that one of my best friends here in Whitehall knew him from college in Riv er Falls and in fact was a roommate with him. He has told me some stories about him and remembered him a a great friend. I just visited with his brother Mark today and he also seems like a good man. Those Skroch boys from Lewis Valley did well for themselves - great.
I was going to call Walter last week and ask him some questions about his Wisconsin family but I was so sad to see that he had passed and it was so recently. I will go see his and my friend who knew him from college and tell him. Our friend was also in the field of soil conservation with the US Dept of Ag. Maybe we should look into planting trees in his honor.
May I ask if you or your children know anything that Walter haad told you about his Kampa family from Arcadia? I see that he has two sisters - could you please tell me their names and maybe phone #'s? Maybe they know something about what I was going to ask Walter about. I would appreciate it if you could maybe be able to help me solve a little family riddle about our Kampa families.
Again - our condolences to you on Walter's passing. I know that he was a good man and will be missed. Thank you.

Please accept condolences from a grad school mate of Walt. It was always fun to interact with him then and through the years at Weed Science meetings, where the interaction would start off where we left off years before, as if it was yesterday. His memory, exuberance, the flowing ideas, the pointed and cogent questions were his trade mark. For both of us science was a challenge and attacking the challenge was fun.
He is missed as a scientist and friend.

My condolences to Carol and all of Walt’s family. Walt was a good friend and colleague. We crossed paths in 1967 when I joined the Horticultural Science faculty. He provided me with a great deal of assistance and guidance to establish a weed science research program. Our programs complemented each other as his primary responsibility was for weed science extension programming to county agents, growers and commodity groups. We collaborated on many projects. I always referred to Walt as the idea man; he was innovative and creative in his approaches to solving problems. He was probably the most forward thinking individual I have ever met. We co-advised several graduate students over our careers and we struck a good balance in advising with Walt providing unique insights into their research projects and I provided the details on how to utilize those insights. We spent many days and nights on the road in NC traveling to research stations and grower locations to establish research and demonstration plots. We had a good number of memorable fishing trips to the coast of NC over his 30 year career at NC State University. Walt always loved the NC Mountains and it was no surprise when he choose to reside in the mountains when he retired. Walt’s research responsibilities was developing weed management strategies for orchards, Christmas trees and woody ornamentals so he spent a lot of time in western NC where he developed a fondness for the region. We traveled to many professional meetings together and frequently shared a hotel room. Walt was always active and never was at a loss for words as he had an amazing range of knowledge in many areas. I valued our friendship and wish we had more opportunity to interact after his retirement. I know he was very proud of his daughters’ accomplishments and his entire family. I know they will miss him dearly.

I'd like to share my condolences and sympathies with the Skroch family. I only met Walter a few times but found him to be a warm and gregarious man. I met Dr. Skroch through his daughter Joan, who received her M.S. from our Department of Microbiology at NC State University. As I recall, we had brief encounters and "hellos" through the 90s where our paths crossed at the NCSU Horticulture plant sales, the University Club, and maybe even the State Fair. He always had a positive outlook. And reading his bio, I note that his B.S. degree was from Univ Wisconsin-River Falls; one of my current (if not last) PhD students in my microbiology lab also received his B.S. from UW-River Falls. Peace and regards to all. Eric Miller (Raleigh, NC)

Walt was a great mentor to me during my time as a weed scientist in the 1980's at NC State. We were in adjacent offices with thin walls and he would call for me though the wall to come and sit in his office while he answered a phone call from an agent or grower about weeds in fruit crops. We had no computer, cell phone, email, texting, etc back then so phone conversations were critical. When we walked outside he would point to weeds in the cracks on the sidewalk and ask me to identify them. Walt and his first wife, Judy, also stood in as proxy Godparents when we christened our daughter Alison in Raleigh in 1985 before driving her up to Massachusetts to visit the family.
My condolences to the entire family. I have been back at NC State for 4 years and I regret not making an effort to see him.
