Obituary of John Francis Woods

Mr. John F. Woods March 25,1926 - November 13, 2009 "Don't cry because it's over.smile because it happened" World War II Veteran, son of a World War I Veteran. Both of them volunteered. Born in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, schooled in the Green Mountains of Vermont, died in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Ashe County where he established, owned and operated Jefferson Investment Center in Glendale Springs managing investment Capital for individuals from Hawaii to Germany as well as corporate retirement funds, churches and non-profit organizations. He retired gradually during 2006 at the age of 80. His personal joy was his family; Kathryn, his wife, 5 children, and 3 step-children. His secondary passion was raising, training, and using horses for hunting, jumping, polo, and just plain fun on farms he previously owned near Rochester, NY, Massachusetts, Deep River, NC and since 1968, Glendale Springs. His broadcasting career began and resumed during and after World War II ranging from Waterbury, Vermont, to Boston, Rochester, NY and finally to establishment of a public company in 1968 that owned and operated radio stations in Durham, Winston Salem, and Utica, New York. They were all sold by 1982. Mr. Woods was a director of the Winston Salem Chamber of Commerce where he established the Crime Stoppers Program in the late 1970's. He was director and president of the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Jeffersons Rotary Club in 1994. He held the presidency or directorship of many similar organizations in cities and communities in which he lived during his career. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 3:15 P.M. at the Parish of the Holy Communion Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs with Father Steve Miller officiating.
