Born November 6, 1931 in Anderson, SC and passed away at the age of 89 in his sleep on January 9, 2021 in Jefferson, NC. He was preceded by his parents L.V. Patterson, Sr. and Ruth Tollison Patterson of Belton, SC and three siblings-Elaine Myers, Levi Jr. and Harold Patterson. He is survived by his wife Sandra, and his sons Shelton Jr, of Jefferson and Mark of Linville, six grandchildren-Myra of Memphis, TN, Zachary of Philadelphia, PA, Jessica Courtney of Sanford, FL, Michelle of LA, CA, Sarah Smithey of Mountain City, TN, Denver of Kannapolis, NC, and 3 great-grandchildren-Skylar, Landen and Brookes Courtney of Sorrento, FL. His God-daughter is Sara Fincher of Charlotte, NC. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He was stationed in Japan at Haneda Air Force Base. While there he worked as a volunteer with missionaries Buz Reece of TEAM Missions, Dawson Trotman and his staff with The Navigators, the GI Gospel Hour and taught Bible and English at a local Japanese college. While in Japan it was his joy and privilege to see many GI’s and Japanese accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. He was a graduate of Anderson Junior College (University) with an AA Degree in 1956 where he earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa, won the American Legion Award of Scholarship, Leadership, Community Service, and Christian Character, was elected President of the Town club, and a member of Student Government. He was invited to the Vallejo and Sacramento areas in California for three months in the summer of 1955 to preach youth revivals. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College (University) with a BA Degree in 1958 where he was initiated into Alpha Omega Ministerial Honor Society. He was awarded his BD Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1962 graduating with languages, Hebrew, and Greek. He earned an In-Resident Certificate of Pastoral Counseling from the NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He was Pastor of Mt. Croghan and Dudley Baptist Churches in SC from 1959 to 1962. He was called to Clarksville Baptist Church, Clarksville, Virginia in 1962 where he served as Pastor until 1966. While he was there the Church grew to its largest Sunday School attendance of 550 and was fully graded. The Church also built a new Sanctuary, which would seat 585, and a Family Life Center, which would seat 350-banquet style. Church offices were also built. In 1966 he joined his brother, Lee’s real estate firm, Pride Mark Properties in Maryland. In 1969 he and his family moved to Charlotte, NC where he opened his own firm, H.S. Patterson Real Estate, Inc. from 1983 until 1985 he was Vice-President and Regional Manager of Merrill Lynch/Townsend Realty in Charlotte. He was consultant to Leighton Ford Ministries from 1986 to 1988 where he helped establish and manage a Charlotte office for Dr. Ford. He was Business Manager for Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church at Ocean Drive, SC from 1993 to 1996. He was Interim and Associate Pastor at Sharon Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC from 2002 to 2004. He settled in Matthews enjoying time with his grandchildren and helped in setting up the City of Matthews Community Garden on Highway 51, before retiring to the North Carolina Mountains (Ashe County “where there are a few more people than cows”.) A memorial Service will be scheduled at a later time due to Covid-19, Memorials in memory of H.
