Mr. Jonathan Gwyn Hartsoe, age 94, of Creston died Saturday morning , January 23rd at his home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Graybeal and Rev. Ricky Mitchell, and his Grandson Tony Hartsoe officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Hartsoe family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Jonathan Gwyn Hartsoe, born September 11, 1915 in Ashe County, NC, the second son of the late Robert C. and Emma Miller Hartsoe, passed away at his home in Creston on January 23, 2010. Gwyn was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mae Walker Hartsoe; one daughter, Mary Evalene Elliott; two grandchildren, Thana Marlene Elliott and Deanna Hartsoe Guy; and five siblings. Gwyn wore many hats during his life. In 1933, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the Ashe County location. He was sent to Holly Ridge in Onslow County on the North Carolina coast until 1935 when he was promoted to Section Assistant Leader and transferred to the 3407th Company in Winston-Salem; the next year, he was transferred to Yancyville, NC where his crew repaired roads and trails. Mr. Hartsoe left the CCC not long after his marriage in 1935 and moved to Pennsylvania where he was employed by a railroad company in construction. He soon returned to Ashe County to his farm on West Mill Creek, where he remained until late 1941 when he moved his small family to Pulaski, VA to work for the army in the production of ammunition. He later graduated from Welding School and moved his family to Baltimore, MD to work on the Liberty Battle Ships produced by Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard, Inc. While in Baltimore, he welded on the "SS John P. Poe" 46th Liberty Ship, which received an award for the shortest time of outfitting of five days. When the war ended, Gwyn returned to Ashe County, where he farmed and sawmilled until he retired. Gwyn Hartsoe was a man with many friends. He made yearly journeys on the Blue Ridge Wagon Train, and was fond of riding horses and driving buggies with friends on weekends. He enjoyed telling a good story and shared a wry sense of humor with his wife. He was Pawpaw to generations of grandchildren. He enjoyed raising cattle. Mr. Hartsoe is survived by a daughter, Joanne Kemp and husband Grant, of Warrensville, NC; one son, Robert Hartsoe and wife Judy, of Creston, NC; five grandchildren, Regina McCoy, Sharyn McCoy, Tony Hartsoe, Jonathan Parker and Wendy Hart; 15 great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and special caregivers Dana and Johnny Roark and Karen Clunn.
