Mrs. Verona Brent Miller Witherspoon, age 96, of Jefferson passed away Sunday night, October 12, 2008 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 2pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Burchett officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Wednesday, one hour prior to the funeral service. Mrs. Witherspoon was born in Ashe County on Monday, August 26, 1912 to the late David and Bessie Miller. She was a retired school teacher. She taught at Whiteoak School, Glendale Springs School, West Jefferson School, Bald Mountain School and Friendship School. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Loyd Witherspoon on September 8, 2007 and a daughter, Brent Witherspoon. She is survived by a son, Dean Witherspoon and wife, Mary Alice, of West Jefferson; a daughter, Judy Bare and husband, Gary, of West Jefferson; five grandchildren, Trevor Witherspoon, of Hickory, Ashley Hollenbeck, of Westminster, MD, Shelley McNeill, of West Jefferson, Shana Venable, of Walnut Cove, NC and Joshua Bare, of West Jefferson; 5 great-grandchildren, Maggie and Emmett Hollenbeck, of Westminster, MD, Colton Miller, Caelon McNeill and Carson McNeill, all of West Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survive.
