It is great sadness that I learned of Dick's passing. As Fire Marshal for 22 years for Caldwell County, I had the opportunities to see Dick at our meetings. Dick also gave me a lot of great advice as a new Fire Marshal. I was blessed by knowing Dick.

I am so sad to learn of Dick's passing. He was a wonderful, caring person and always had a kind word. I got to know Dick when I was employed with Ashe Memorial Hospital Mountain Hearts facility. He was very proud of Rose and his family. I will always remember him bringing samples of Rose's sugar free deserts to share with the staff. Every year since leaving Mountain Hearts I have recieved a Christmas card or email from him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. May God comfort you.

Dick was always very nice and very helpful to me. I served as the Wake County Fire Marshal in the 90s and Dick set the model for all other Fire Marshals to follow. He implemented innovations and programs that were really cutting edge in North Carolina. I respected him and thank him for the help and support that he gave me.

Dick was "Mr. Mountain Hearts"
for years, usually being the first patron there, arriving very early in the morning. He was very special, upbeat, with a quirky sense of humor. He will be remembered as very special...wonderful friend!

dear Sauer Family,
My prayers of peasce and thoughts of sorry are sent to you. Dick was my oldest cousin.
The older cousins at family gathers would chase down the younger cousins and tie them up in put them in a circle until they had rounded up the group. Dick purposely left my hands loose one time- so that I could run again...what a "guy".
I am sorry that I couldn't be present to support you during this time in your journey. I just got the message today.
With lots of l ove and prayers --- i will offer mass this evening for Dick and the family.
Frank Wippel JR.
