Obituary of Martin George Williams

Mr. Martin G. Williams, Jr. of Jacksonville Beach, Fl. and Ashe County, NC passed away June 30th surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on September 11, 1929. Mr. Williams was the son of Martin G. Williams, Sr. and Marguerite Haile Williams. He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Carol Miller Williams. Survivors left to cherish Martin's memory include: son, Stephen Bailey Williams of Jacksonville Beach, FL and his wife, Rosalind, their son David Williams; daughter Diana Williams Faison of Charlotte, NC and her husband, Cameron and their children Catie and Mary Cameron; and son, Kenneth Andrew Williams and his wife, Candace of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and stepchildren, Louie and Leeann Stout. Mr. Williams graduated from the Bolles School and Duke University and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. Mr. Williams was a long time resident of Jacksonville Beach, Fl., serving two terms on the City Council and involved in numerous civic organizations. He was also the Senior Warden of St. Paul's by the Sea Episcopal Church. Mr. Williams followed in his parent's footsteps in the development of Jacksonville Beach as a travel destination and business/residential community. He and his wife, Carol enjoyed their retirement years in the mountains of Ashe County, NC where Martin was actively involved in the Ashe County Historical Society, the Museum of Ashe County History, and the Episcopal Parish of the Holy Communion. Mr. Williams had a lifelong passion for Duke basketball and Florida Gator football. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 3rd at 11:00 A.M at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs. A memorial service and internment at Oaklawn Cemetery will be held at Jacksonville, FL. The family would like to thank the entire 2nd floor staff at Ashe Memorial Hospital for the kind and loving care given to Mr. Williams. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Museum of Ashe County History, P.O. Box 1404, Jefferson, NC, 28640. Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a "daddy."
