Obituary of Bryan Spencer

Lee Bryan Spencer, 81, of Mouth of Wilson, VA, Grassy Creek Community, passed away on Thursday July 8th 2010 at his home following a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 3pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Huffman and Rev. Ken Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday, two hours prior to the funeral service. Born in the Helton Community on April 30, 1929, he was a son of the late Breece and Retha Spencer. He served in the US Army during the Korean era, and spent his career in banking, retiring from First Union National Bank in West Jefferson with 31 years service. After retiring, he returned to the public sector, working with Parker and Burgess Realty and Yadkin Valley Bank. Mr. Spencer was an active member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He was also an avid historian and genealogist, and was frequently consulted by others who were researching families or the history of Ashe County and Southwest Virginia. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Erin Kay Spencer and a brother, Richard G. Spencer. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Joyce Wright Spencer. He was the proud father of, and is survived by four sons; Dr. Barry Spencer (Joyce) of Knoxville, TN, Rikki Spencer (Becky) of Salisbury, NC, Kenny Spencer (Teresa) of Fleetwood, NC and Danny Spencer (Stephanie) of West Jefferson, NC. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren; Larry Spencer (Jami), Carrie Carter (Staton), Adam Spencer, Ethan Spencer, Makayla Spencer, Alex Spencer, Alayne Spencer, and Macy Spencer, and 1 great grandchild, Estella Rose Spencer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grassy Creek Baptist Church, 420 Grassy Creek Rd., Grassy Creek, NC 28631or the Rugby Rescue Squad, 53 Rugby Rd., Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363.
