Obituary of R. Don Wiles

R. Don Wiles, age 97, of West Jefferson died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Margate Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jefferson, NC. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at First Baptist Church of West Jefferson with Rev. Michael Lea and Rev. Ken Morris officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:30-6:00pm prior to the memorial service at First Baptist Church of West Jefferson. He was born Thursday, January 30, 1913 in Wilkes County, one of nine children to Crealy and Lillie Wiles. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hazel Chipman Wiles; three brothers, Herman, Frazier, and Merrill Wiles; three sisters, Ruth Spicer, Eula Roope, and Elizabeth Davis; and one great-grandson Joseph Krause. He is survived by his three daughters, Marlyn and husband Rouss Hartzog of West Jefferson, Judy and husband Reece Graham of Greensboro, Kay and husband George Schieren of Boone. He also is survived by six grandchildren, Ellen Curtis, Reece Graham, Donna Jones, Randy Graham, Charles Hartzog, and Logan Hartzog, eleven great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Ruby Gilreath of Jacksonville, Florida and Louise Dowell of North Wilkesboro. Don was a long distance truck driver until he opened Wiles Jewelry in West Jefferson. He owned and operated the jewelry store for almost thirty years until his retirement. He was a member of the West Jefferson Fire Department, Ashe County Rescue Squad, and an avid long-time member of the West Jefferson Lions Club. In addition to the great love Don had for his family, he loved traveling and golf. After retirement he drove cars for Superior, golfed and hunted golf balls in the woods at Mt. Aire Golf Course. He had been in all fifty states remembering every road he had been on. He was a charter member of Mountain Aire Golf Club and played regularly, even when he was ninety. He led a busy life having fun doing the things he loved. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
