Obituary of Clara Miller

Mrs. Clara Miller, age 90, of West Jefferson, passed away Sunday morning, February 20, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Miller is survived by a daughter, Jane Banks and husband, John, of West Jefferson; a son, Bill Miller and wife, Gael, of Ocracoke; three sisters, Evon Johnson, of Laurel Springs, Alta Roseman, of China Grove and Christine Johnson and husband, Jack, of Baltimore, MD; nine granddaughters Jeannine, Carla, Kristy, Kimberly, Karen, Shawn, Angelia, Allison and Carrie; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Miller was born in Laurel Springs on May 7, 1920 to the late Willis Ward and Missouri Woodie Miller. In 1955, Clara and her husband, Reo built Miller's Jewelry Store in downtown West Jefferson. Mrs. Miller enjoyed working, taking care of her customers with friendly and personal service, with long-time friend Faye Caudill. When the business closed in 2005, Miller's Jewelry was the oldest business in town still operated by the original owners. When she was away from the store, Mrs. Miller enjoyed being with her friends and family; playing dominos and rook or cooking and canning. She loved to travel and was always on the go. Mrs. Miller was a member of Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Reo Miller; parents, Willis Ward and Missouri Woodie Miller; a daughter, Ann Miller; a brother Clayton Miller and a sister, Maureen Sheets. The family extends heart-felt thanks to Mrs. Miller's dedicated caregivers and to the members of the High Country Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 2pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Thom Burleson and Rev. Ken Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Peak Creek Cemetery in Laurel Springs. The family will receive friends at Boone Family Funeral Home from 12:00-2:00PM on Wednesday, two hours prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Ashe Services for Aging Foundation, PO Box 9, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
