Hugh Clayton Darnell, age 82, of Boone died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Roans Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:30am on Tuesday at the homeplace, 347 Old US Hwy. 421 South in Boone and also from 1:00-2:00pm on Tuesday at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Darnell was born in Ashe County on Monday, December 31, 1928 to the late Hugh Montgomery (Mont) and Effie Jenkins Darnell. He served in the United States Army during Korean War, he was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed farming and working with his cattle. In his spare time he enjoyed sitting on the front porch with his friends, smoking his cigars. He is survived by a son, Phil Darnell and wife, Bennett, of Jefferson; two daughters, Sharon Darnell Long and husband, Gary, of Blacksburg, VA and Teresa Rose and husband, John, of Holly Springs, NC; a brother, J.L. Darnell, of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Magdalene Miller, of Norfolk, VA, Juanita Church, of Piney Creek, Rebecca Parks, of Walnut Cove, NC and Ona Caldwell, of Winston-Salem, NC; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
