Obituary of Mariam " Shorty" Areleigh Joines

Mrs. Mariam Areleigh Grogan Joines, better known as "Shorty" age 83, of West Jefferson, the Beaver Creek Community, passed away Saturday evening, July 30, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 2:00pm at Beaver Creek Christian Church with Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Jim Dawes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Tuesday, one hour prior to the funeral service. Mrs. Joines was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, October 4, 1927 to the late Raymond and Estella Beatrice Worley Grogan. She was an owner and operator of Bina Caf and later she opened her own daycare. She was a faithful member of Beaver Creek Christian Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Shafter (Pee-Wee) Joines on October 8, 2005; three brothers, Stanford Grogan, Garland Grogan and Shirley Grogan; a sister Bobbie Jean Greer. Mrs. Joines is survived by a daughter, Regina Billings and companion, Mariano, of West Jefferson; two brothers , Arvell Grogan and wife, Bertha, of West Jefferson and Glenn Grogan and wife, Ella Sue, of Fleetwood; three granddaughters, Ashley Billings, of West Jefferson, April Snow, of Warrensville and Deanna Billings, of West Jefferson; four great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Norman Greer, of Fleetwood; four nieces and eight nephews also survive.
