Obituary of Colleen Elizabeth Calloway

Mrs. Colleen Elizabeth Houck Calloway, age 96, of West Jefferson died Tuesday night, October 4, 2011 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Celebration of life will be held Friday, October 7, 2011 at 3:00PM at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Owen Peeler. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:30-3:00PM; prior to the service. Mrs. Calloway was born in Ashe County on Wednesday, May 26, 1915 to the late Jacob Lawson and Betty Greer Houck. She worked at West Jefferson Post Office for many years. Colleen and her first husband, Robert Colvard owned Robert's Drug. In later years, she was the manager of the Northwest Trading Post. She was a member of the West Jefferson Women's Club, UMW and Boone Quilting club. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Robert D. Colvard and Robert (Bob) Calloway. Mrs. Calloway is survived by a daughter, Dale Sheets, of West Jefferson; a sister, Carol Goodman and husband, Lowell, of Germantown, TN; a brother, George Denver Houck, of Columbia, SC; three step daughters, Bobbie Blevins, Mabel Calloway and Mary Spears, all of Wilkesboro; three grandchildren Rob Sheets, of West Jefferson, Karen Lathem, of West Jefferson and James Sheets, of Phafftown, NC; 5 great-grandchildren Sydney Sheets, Cathryn Lathem, Elissha Price, Gabriel Sheets and Eryon Price; several nieces and nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 NC Hwy 194 South West Jefferson NC 28694 or High Country Healthcare Hospice, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
