I have known some good people in my life, but if someone would ask me who was the best person I have ever known, it would be Richard. He possessed rare qualities in these modern times: love and dedication to family, his spirituality, his community involvement by always thinking and putting others first and finding time for their needs, his leaderhip, and his craftsmanship in his work. In short, Richard always did the right thing.
I recognized the special qualities that Richard possessed and he was a model person that influenced my life. While Richard was a better person than me, knowing him has made me a better person. I suspect he has touched many others the same way.
Last night, I played the Ave Maria and Pachelbel Canon on the piano for Richard. I hope he liked them. I know he overlooked my mistakes.

Dear Cathy and Family,
My thoughts and my prayers go out to you and the entire family. I have a treasured tapesty of memories as I think about my friend in Christ, Richard! Richard was a very positive mentor in my life. I recall times spent with Richard and family at Kure Beach; climbs up to Listening Rock and to Gentry's Creek Falls with Grady and Richard; Richard and Cathy serving as wonderful youth counselors at Meadowview Mennonite Church; Richard's officiating basketball games when I was a player at Lees-McRae College and later refereeing some of our games when I was coaching at Northwest Ashe H.S.; Cathy and Richard kindly allowing my family and I to spend a wonderful week one summer in their cabin on Long Meadow; and, many wonderful experiences of worship of our Lord at Meadowview, not to forget the many awesome covered dish meals where we sat around table together to fellowship.
God blessed us all in giving us Richard Shepherd and that same God who loaned Richard to us has received him into his eternal presence and love. May God comfort and bless you in this time of grief and loss and always!

Dear Family; I am so sorry to hear of Richards passing. God must of been in a hurry to have him in his fold, for we know he is in a better place.I used to see all of you at the Lansing Post Office when I was a clerk there back in the late eighties. What a nice family indeed. I last saw Richard at McDonalds getting a cup of coffee, he met me with a smile and a hello as he walked out the door.I did not know of his illness then. He seemed so healthy and happy last summer as he painted my grandpa's old homeplace in Warrensville next to my moms on the New River. He would visit on his breaks and eat candy and share stories with us, it was so obvious to me what a gentle soul he was and what a wonderful family he had. He loved sharing that, he wanted a print of a painting my mother has hanging on her wall for a Christmas present to give to his daughter, he said it reminded him so much of her,he was a thoughtful man. He was a Great man and will be missed by many.Just hold all those memories you have close to your heart and he will always seem close, those are things no one can take away. Please know my thoughts and Prayers are with you.

Cathy and family,
I was so saddened to hear that Richard had passed away. I will always remember his smile and when he smiled his eyes would light up and they seemed to smile too. He was such a good hearted person. I remember when Cathy and Richard would go on trips, my dad would feed their cats and Richard would always bring Dad back something. Dad would show us kids what Richard gave him. Dad was always so proud of the treasures Richard gave him. He was such a good friend and neighbor. I remember talking to my Mom on the phone and Richard would stop by to say Hello and I could hear him in the background saying a big Hello. He visited my Mom and Dad often and called them often too and he would always blow the horn when he passed by their house. I know he will be missed by so many but my heart does rejoice today knowing that he is in heaven with the Lord and I just know he has a smile on his face and I know his eyes are smiling and they are shining so bright in heaven.

Cathy and family, We are saddened by your loss of Richard. We enjoyed working with Richard at the Presbyterian community Christmas Parties at White Oak Community Center. He was an extented cousin, and and we were both born/reared in the Little Horse Creek area. His love for the children and his childhood community was always obvious. The last time that I contacted Richard about being "Santa" for the party (as he always was) he happily promised to be Santa again. He finished the phone call with HO! HO! HO! Richard's health has begun to decline by the date of the party, not only did he arrange for a substitute Santa, but he came to help the substitute get settled in and introduce him to me. Richard wore the Santa costume for the party but
Richard's everyday life was lived the Christian Spirit of "Santa".
May GOD wrap his arms around

As a teacher of Richard, I know what a great character he had. On the first day of one of the seasons for either fishing or hunting, it was
customary to have a graded exercise so that students would not miss school. My conscience troubled me about how to keep from lowering Richard's grade for I knew he wouldn't deny where he was nor why. I can't remember how but I know his grades were high enough that one low grade wouldn't have meant much in the long run.he stood for what he believed then and I know he remained that way.He was a nice kid. I have taught thousands but never one more honorable than he was then. Ethel Welch

Dear Mr. Richard's Family
We are so sorry for your loss. We just found out this week about his death while arranging our annual Christmas Tree event with your family. We have been coming to the farm for greater than 15 years, the weekend after Thanksgiving. We always loved and looked forward to coming. There was laughter, especially when Jmark almost ran his truck off the road when Richard said "It might have skimmed over a little ice last night." We had a wonderful meal at the cabin and cut our trees, and headed back to Thomasville talking about our great day we had in the mountains and with Richard and his family. Thanks for all those fun years and happy times. I don't believe anyone will forget the Shepherd family. May God be with you during this time.
