Obituary of Ronald Clayton Cox

Ronald Clayton Cox, 92, formerly of Rocks and Dundalk MD, died in Ashe Memorial Hospital, Jefferson, NC. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Houser Cox in 1966 and will be laid to rest next to her in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD. Born in Grassy Creek, NC, he was the second of eight sons of Clay Greer Cox and Nellie Phipps Cox. He is survived by his two children, Shirley Cox Pilcher and husband, Robert B. Pilcher of Charleston, SC and his son Ronald C. Cox, Jr. and wife, Sharon L. Cox of Crumpler, NC. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Galin J. Spicer, Galphin L. Jackson, Jr. Julie R. Schultz, Lindsay J. Ritter, Zachary C. Cox, Colleen M. Hoffmeister and nine great-grandchildren. Four brothers also survive, Herbert B. Raymond D. Carroll L. and William B. Cox, all of Harford County, MD. He was predeceased by brothers, Leonard F. John R. and Robert S. Cox. Raised on a farm in Harford County, MD he graduated from Highland High School in 1938 and played on the county championship/Maryland state runner-up basketball team. He spent his 38 working years starting in WWII as a shipyard welder, retiring in 1977 to Jefferson, NC with his second wife Rose K. Cox also predeceased. As a retiree, he pursued his passions for gardening, hunting and fishing for thirty wonderful years. His family was also a source of great joy and pride and he was greatly loved by them all. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11:00am at Evans Funeral Home Chapel, Forest Hill, MD. Memorials may be made to Ashe Presbyterian Church, 220 Lynch Colvard Lane, Jefferson, NC 28640 where he came to grace or the charity of your choice. Our beloved father need not be idealized in death beyond what he was in life, but should be remembered as a good and decent man who always tried to do the right thing, a good and faithful soldier and an ever steady presence in our life.
