Obituary of James Neal Biggerstaff

James Neal Biggerstaff, better known as Jim, age 76, of Newport, NC (his permanent residence) and of Jefferson died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at his home in Jefferson. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 12:00pm at Bald Mountain Cemetery with military rites with Brother/Deacon Herb Rash officiating. Mr. Biggerstaff was born in Rutherfordton, NC on Wednesday, July 1, 1936 to the late Orel and Leona Melton Biggerstaff. He was an Eagle Scout with God & Country Award. He graduated from Walter M. Williams High School and Elon College. He was a contractor for commercial property and he also was an Instructor with Carteret Community College for 11 years. Jim was a member of American Legion Post #46 and served as President of Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. He was president of the rotary club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Jim was inducted in American Legion North Carolina Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. He served on the following boards: Coastal Community Action and Habitat for Humanity. He was recipient of The Order of Long Leaf Pine Award. He was a very caring person and loved to be around people. He will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Howard Biggerstaff, of Newport; a son, Jay Biggerstaff and Tammy Biggerstaff, of Tampa Florida; three daughters, Debra Riggs, of Burlington, NC, Beth Holman and husband, Dwight, Jr. of Jefferson, NC and Shellie Piner and husband, Greg, of Newport, NC; two brothers, John Deal Biggerstaff and wife, Bertha, of Savannah, GA and Frank Biggerstaff and wife, Judy, of Knightdale, NC; seven grandchildren, Kasey Overcash and husband, Josh, Kim Darcy, Kellie Holman, Chad Holman and Jamie Taylor, Ava Rae Biggerstaff, Drew Piner and wife Samantha, Sela Piner; five great-grandchildren, Paige Overcash, Lorali Overcash, Kaylyn Holman, Riley Darcy and Sarah Ann Piner; several nieces and nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the High Country Healthcare Hospice, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640 and American Legion Post #46 Scholarship Fund, Carteret Community College, 3505 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
