Mrs. Shelby Jean Carpenter Hartzog , age 75 of West Jefferson passed away Sunday afternoon, September 29, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Garrett Mahaffey and Rev. Billy Joe Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartzog Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, two hours prior to the funeral service. Mrs. Hartzog was born in Kingsport, TN to the late Norman and Ottie Patrick Carpenter. Shelby was a member of Pine Swamp Baptist Church. She was always in good cheer and loved everyone; enjoyed being around people. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be missed by all. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Henry Hartzog on November 27, 2000; two sisters, Betty Sue Carpenter and Wanda Mae Carpenter; a brother-in-law, Bill May and a sister-in-law, Betty Carpenter. Mrs. Hartzog is survived by four daughters, Brenda Summerlin and husband, Billy, of Macclesfield , NC, Debra Salmons, of West Jefferson, Sandie Bower and husband, Mark, of West Jefferson and Beth Hartzog and fiance Jason Fairchild, of West Jefferson; a sister, Wilma May, of Jefferson; five brothers, Denver (Herman) Carpenter and wife, Anna, of Lansing, Ernie Carpenter and wife, Barbara, of Lansing, Charlie Carpenter and wife, Karen, of Lansing, Jerry Carpenter and wife, Martha, of Lansing and Dolin Carpenter and wife, Joyce (Sunday), of Elk Park, NC; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces & nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Pine Swamp Baptist Church, c/o Sandie Bower, 3937 Hartzog Ford Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694. The family is meeting at the homeplace at 3789 Hartzog Ford Road in West Jefferson.
