Mrs. Rena Marie Pope Mahala, age 93, of Creston passed away Wednesday morning, March 19, 2014 at her home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 2:00pm at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Rector Henson, Rev. Anthony Roark and Rev. Junior Seatz officiating. Burial will follow in the Mahala Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00pm on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Rock Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Mahala was born in Ashe County on Thursday, July 8, 1920 to the late Ennis and Susie Mahala Pope. She was owner and operator of Mahala's Store in Creston. She enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; and missed by all. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Mahala; a son, Lee Mahala; a grandson, Robert Hamm, Jr.; three brothers, Omery Pope, Roy Odell Pope and Harlin Pope. Mrs. Mahala is survived by two sons, David Mahala and Shirlie Mahala, both of Creston; a daughter, Sue Hamm and husband, Robert, of Creston; a brother, Floyd Pope, of Mountain City, TN; three sisters, Louise Simmons, of Maryland, Geneva Hines, of Maryland and Beulah Allen, of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Robert C. Mahala, Linda Groves and Charlie Hamm; two great-grandchildren, Grayson Groves and Lundy Groves; several nieces and nephews also survive.
