Obituary of William Kenneth Holdaway
WILLIAM KENNETH (KEN) HOLDAWAY – May 8, 1922-June 3, 2014
Our beloved “Pawpaw”, Ken Holdaway, went peacefully in his sleep to be with the Lord on June 3, 2014. He was a loyal Christian, who proudly served in the Civilian Conservation Corps before becoming an employee of the National Park Service, where he retired with many accolades after 38 years of service. His love of animals was a thing of beauty and he was lovingly nicknamed “Doctor Doolittle” by some of his many grandchildren for “his” deer he hand fed, along with the menagerie of wildlife who came to his door for food and affection.
He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 58 years, Edith Belle Holdaway, of the home, his mother Ina Phillips Benge and his stepfather William Benge. He is survived by his children, Kennie Holdaway of Ararat VA, Brenda (Barry) Dunlevy of Pinehurst NC, Shirley (Wally) Howard of West Jefferson NC, Lanny Holdaway of Southport NC and Larry (Phyllis) Holdaway of West Jefferson NC. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, Myra Nixon (Bill), Byron Buxton, Hope Buxton, Wendy Springs(Mike), Tabbie Watson (Andrew), Jason Holdaway(Heather), Hunter Buxton and Justin Holdaway; 11 great grandchildren, Sean, Ryan, Jacob, Samantha, Sydney, Maggie, Holden, Alyssa, Lincoln, Cypress and Aiden and 1 great great grandchild, Nathaniel.
