Obituary of Rufus Elwood Taylor
Elwood Taylor, age 85, of Lansing, NC passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.
Elwood was born August 9, 1928 to the late Harrison & Eliza Taylor. He attended Lansing High School and served in the United States Navy immediately after graduation. Following the Navy, he began his career as a draftmen with Barber & Ross Steel in Washington, DC. After beginning a family he returned to Ashe County working at Sprague Electric Company until his retirement to the family farm in the Whelin Ridge Community. He acted as a good steward of the land and advocate for the wildlife on his farm. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters, Ted Taylor, Ottis Taylor, Lura Sullivan, Rhea Cox, Vada Pugh, Ada Bowman, Elsie Sullivan, Dora Denton and Gency Weaver; a grandson, Eugene Blevins.
He is survived by his wife, Flo; three daughters, Kay (Fred) Auton, of Boomer, NC, Sue (Terry) Hodge, of Columbia, TN and Elva (Chris) Lester, of Abingdon, VA; three grandchildren, Angie Shumaker, Ashley Hodge Matthew Hodge; one great grandson, Noah Shumaker.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 4:00-7:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel.
Graveside services will be on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 10:30am at Taylor-Cox Cemetery on the family farm.
