Obituary of Llewellyn Zwicker Gross
OBITUARY FOR LLEWELLYN Z. GROSS
On August 21, 2014 Llewellyn ("Lew") Zwicker Gross died peacefully at his home,
nestled among the mountains in Jefferson, NC, with his daughter and caregiver Karen
Gross at his side, and where his family had recently gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday on July 13.
With a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Lew was a well-known sociologist and
writer. The bulk of his career was spent as a professor at SUNY-Buffalo (formerly the
University of Buffalo) where he served on the faculty for 34 years, 13 as chair of his
department. He authored or edited 5 books and more than 30 articles in the fields of
Social Theory, Social Psychology, and Medical, Educational, and Philosophical
Sociology, and many book reviews. Among his best-known works is the book
Symposium on Sociological Theory, ranked in 1968 16th out of 1000 books that
universities expected their doctoral candidates to know, and an article on measuring
attitudes toward romanticism, which attracted wide professional notice as well as a
popular audience. He served as a consultant for the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the New York Central Railroad, and was
chair of the theory sections of the national and regional meetings of the American
Sociological Association, was President of the New York Sociological Society, and
served on several Boards and advisory panels. In their retirement, Lew and his wife
Genevieve searched the country for an ideal place to live, and they chose Jefferson,
where they built a beautiful home in the mountains. He enjoyed the land he loved, and spent many hours writing poetry and humor that reflected his philosophy of life.
Predeceased by Genevieve, his wife of 74 years, Lew is survived by daughter Karen
and two sons, Alfred of Jefferson, NC, and Franz of Williamsburg, VA. Also, three
grandchildren, Glendon Gross of Tucson, AZ, Susanna Gross of Boulder, CO, and
Katheryn Hinkle of Petaluma, CA, and three great grandchildren, Esther Gross of
Washington DC, and Samantha Hinkle and Timothy Hinkle, both of Petaluma, CA.
A family memorial will be private. Condolences are welcome.
