Obituary of Mona Jane Outen

Mona Jane Young Outen January 12, 1936 – September 4, 2014 In the early hours of September 4th, 2014 Jane Outen, beloved wife and adored mother, passed away at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. She was surrounded by her loving family. A strong person, Jane had been bravely fighting the good fight since February of this year. She was born in Anderson, SC in 1936 to Hester Howard Young and William Henry Young, who preceded her in death. She loved to travel and might say she had “itchy feet”. Her parents moved several times for her father’s work in the mills and she finally landed in Selma, NC. She then attended East Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education and moved to Florida to teach elementary school in Port Tampa City. It was in Tampa that she met her husband Ray and began a whole new adventure. In the beginning she taught school while he attended school. When he began his career with the FAA she followed him to his various posting, getting the chance to scratch those “itchy feet”. Along the way they built a family and got to see and live in many different places including Miami, the Tampa area, the Panama Canal Zone, Orlando, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, and many others. Even while planted in one place for a while she got to visit most of the western half of the US, most of the southern US and parts of New England. When her husband retired she moved, yet again, to the mountains of Ashe County, NC to settle in the Lansing area where she lived with her husband for the last 22 years. Jane loved to sew and made many garments for her daughter and herself over the years. She continued to use this talent in a family craft business for a number of years, both before and after her husband retired. She and her family traveled extensively to participate in craft shows throughout the South. After retirement, she developed a love of quilting and enjoyed attending classes and visiting quilt shops in several states seeking out special fabrics and the latest books and patterns. She was also an avid reader and spent many hours enjoying mystery novels. Memorial services will be held on Monday September 15, 2014 at 2PM at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Margaret Wannamcher officiating. Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 16 at 1PM at The National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. The family will receive friends on Monday September 15, 2014 from 1-2pm at Boone Family Funeral Home prior to the service. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ray Outen, her daughter, Karen Outen of Hickory, NC and her son, Dennis Outen of Point Harbor, NC. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Owen of Statesville, NC and a large number of nieces and nephews who are scattered throughout the southern US. Hers was a beautiful soul and a strong spirit. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
