Obituary of John Pete Absher

Mr. John Edward Absher Sr., better known as "Pete", age 87, of Scottville, North Carolina passed away Tuesday morning, November 4, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Rob Brooks, Gerald Beeber, and Chris Swift officiating. Burial will follow in the Scottville Baptist Church Cemetery, Laurel Springs, NC with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Boone Family Funeral Home. "Pete" Absher was born in Ashe County, NC on Wednesday, July 27, 1927 to the late Cox Edgar Absher and Cynthia Victoria Faircloth. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ann F. Absher; a brother, Richard Absher; and a sister, Wilma Loflin. Whether you knew him as Daddy; PaPaw; Honey; PaPaw Pete; Pete or friend, you knew him as a man of character. From his "ability to make people laugh" (which he thought was his biggest accomplishment in life) to the Army retiree of 20 years that was tough as nails, he was solid and reliable. His love of the land was reflected through his vegetable garden to his Christmas trees and wreaths. Pete was instrumental in forming the JR ROTC program in Ashe County. This program is still a part of the lives of many of Ashe counties young people today. He loved to hook to his 5th wheel camper and take off to a campground at the drop of a hat. Pete loved a good Bluegrass band and would listen for hours. He was a faithful father, grandfather, husband and friend, who will be missed by all. Mr. Absher is survived by his loving companion, Ms. Toy Pratt of Scottville, NC; a son, John E. Absher Jr. of Scottville, NC; a daughter, Jo Ann Swift and husband David of Charleston, SC; a brother, Harold Absher of Germanton, NC; a sister Frieda Riggan of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Chris Swift and wife Jamie of Charleston, SC, Anthony Scott and Kelly of Wilkesboro, NC; Alicia Scott and Randy of Lansing, NC; Lauren Absher and Michael of Durham, NC; 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; and numerous nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Medi-Home Hospice, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
