Mr. Sidney Smith Allen, age 76, of Creston, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 21, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 24, 2015 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Graybeal officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Boone Family Funeral Home. Mr. Allen was born in Ashe County on Wednesday, March 15, 1939 to the late John Smith and Margaret Pearl Mock Allen. Sidney and Glenda raised their family in Maryland where he retired as Comptroller and Defense Accounting Officer at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He actively served the Lord throughout his life in the local church and with the Gideons International. He spent countless hours in service to others, never seeking the praise of men. He was a mentor to young men through the Boy Scouts and pivotal in the growth of the Riverview Community Center where he served on the Board for several years. Sidney enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking, watching college basketball, and jogging. Sidney completed the JFK 50 Mile Ultra-marathon thirty times. He was devoted to his family and lived to bring glory to God, and to share with others how they can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Graybeal Allen; two sons, Michael Allen and wife, Andrea, of Havre De Grace, Maryland and Steven Allen and wife, Monica, of Creston; two daughters, Mary Joyce Bland and husband, David, of Columbia, SC and Elaine Jones and husband, David, of Frostburg, Maryland; two sisters, Mona Barlow, of Bel Air, Maryland and Myrtle Prince, of Creston; ten grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
