I still sit here in disbelief. I lost a wonderful pastor a wonderful man of wisdom and the most wonderful friend. I am so very saddened by the passing of Preacher Wayne, it's through tears that I write this. Wayne I cannot tell you how much I am going to miss you brother I cannot express the hollow feeling I have in the center of my gut. Preacher taught me so many things, things that brought closer to God and understanding what we are here to do. I am not the kind of guy that tells other guys I love them batting my grandfather, dad and brother it's just not something I ever did, too macho is what I thought for that. but Wayne he was not that way, and when I first heard him say Shane buddy I love you I am going to be honest I was a little taken back.. I heard him say that and you knew he meant it it showed he genuinely cared for me. Wayne loved all people he was always quick with a smile and never a harsh word. I looked up to Wayne and often thought now he had it figured out he was always so happy. All the times I got to spend with him are forever etched into my mind, my baptism,asking to chaperone Youth Alive, my grandfathers passing in Watauga Medical , he was there not for my family but visiting a sick little boy yet God led him to our door and he made the passing of my best friend my grandfather bare able and I would not of wanted another person by our side for that I will never be able to repay my gratitude for that. I had planned to ask Preacher Wayne to marry me and Judith because honestly I could not think of a better person and I wanted my friend there .... he was always there for me and yet I could not be with him at the end, I know we didn't know but it will always be with me I will always feel like I should have been, but it was not to be. I can still see your smiling face my friend I can still hear your voice I can still feel your presence in my everyday life, though I do not ever ..... I will because I mean it just as you did my friend I love you brother and I dearly dearly miss you. May God be with Stephanie and the family I love you guys

A couple of days after I heard of Wayne's passing, I felt the urge to get away from work and my current responsibilities and just think for a few minutes. Later, sitting in a local restaurant, I recalled a sermon I heard by a burly old visiting preacher years ago. In his introductory remarks, the preacher called another man "sweet". Now, everyone in the building knew that was the ultimate compliment, because it referred to a life transformed. It described a man of God. It described a man pouring forth the Fruits of the Spirit, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. That old preacher wasn't referring to Wayne, but he could have been. Like the man the preacher was talking about, Wayne was strong, and principled but he was ultimately a sweet man. Wayne seemed to be a cut above most of us to start with, but he allowed the Lord to mold, bend and shape him into something exceptional. The Lord took Wayne to high places.
Wayne was a friend to all, but he made a special point of befriending those the world seemed to pass by and ignore. That's what Christ did, so that's what Wayne did. I was blessed to know Wayne. I was blessed that he stopped by to chat a few times, though I know he had other important things to do. It's a sad time for those of us left behind. Thankfully, we have the promise of a reunion and the hope of indescribable beauty to come.

Stephanie, So sorry, I know you heat is broken. I was so shocked and heart broken when I got that phone call Thursday morning. Enjoyed the years you were at Warrensville Baptist Church and the fellowship and worship we had. Thank you for sharing Wayne with so many people, to do Gods work. He was so gifted,, loved to listen to him sing. In my mind I see him singing "Wish You Were Here" and "Thank You For Your Blessing On Me".

Stephanie, Wanda, Sharon and family, We were so saddened to hear of the passing of Wayne. Our family always loved and cared for him from the time he was our pastor at Boiling Springs Church. he baptised three of our children, Nolan, Jesse, and Randi. My sister Leigh, and her husband Chuck were the first marriage he performed. he was such a joyful, loving and unique man. God lived in him and through him. We have many memories including activities with the children, joyful sermons, church trips to Biltmore and water parks and ice capades, etc. to hear him sing and okay the piano was a rare gift indeed. My father died a month ago and my parents always loved Wayne. We asked him to sing and of course he showed up and sang gloriously in his typical Wayne fashion. Ever grateful to add the memory of being able to hug him and tell him we loved him one more time. During the service, we played an audio clip of our (now grown) children singing in church. Terry and I looked up to see Wayne smiling through tears at this memory, unknowingly giving us another memory-one we will carry as our last. Wayne was generous to a fault. when my mother died, he somehow found out ( not sure how-we were no linger in church together) and he showed up in less than two hours with an abundance of delicious food for us all. Very fitting since my Mom adored him so. Heaven is rejoicing with you there Wayne, although it is hard to imagine you any more joyful than here on earth. I do believe you are pain free and healthy and there with loved ones who were waiting for you. Until we see you again our friend. Terry and Cindy Eller

Sweet Stephanie you are and will remain in our thoughts and prayers. Preacher Wayne was a wonderful man of God. He was always there for our family the 20 years that we lived in Ashe County. He baptized our son, DJ. He sang beautifully at my daddy's funeral. I can't say enough about how well he served God, loved people of all ages, and influenced the lives of countless youth in a positive way. Our family loved Preacher Wayne and we will never forget him, his infectious smile and all he has done for us. Rest in peace dear man with your father in heaven. Your rewards are many.

Wayne and I go back to early childhood. We were neighbors and went to church together for many years. He was a very special person and was there for me and my family when Mom and Dad both passed away. He is where he worked his entire life to be. ..WITH THE LORD!
