Our deepest and sincerest condolences to the family. Words alone can not ease the pain when grieving the loss of a love one. The Bible provides comfort during these difficult times. Revelation 21:3-4 states, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away". May God give you and your family comfort in your loving memories and in His promise that soon we will never experience losing our loved ones in death and we will be able to see them again once they resurrected as per John 5:28-29. May these words give you a new hope, with deepest sympathy and warmth of heart.

The memories of many times with Mike have flooded through my mind in the past two days. Mike, Diane, Candace, and Shannon played a big part in my life and that of my family. Of course, I got to know Mike as a band parent. He gave so many volunteer hours to helping me build a new band program at Ashe County High School, and I don't think we would have been able to pull it off had he not been there. Mike's knowledge of the community, dealing with people, and his passion for those band students helped make it all possible. He drove buses, built things, worked at events, held chicken bbq's, and most of all, was always there.
One of my fondest memories was at a marching band contest held at East Surry High School (I think in 2001). Our band kids had been fighting for now the third season to win a grand championship at a contest. Well, this was our night, and when they announced the "Band of the Day" as the Husky Vanguard Marching Band, Mike Dixon shouted out above all the applause; "Who's the big dog now?" That's on film somewhere. His pride was unmistakable
Each Spring, Mike would put together a chicken bbq fundraiser for the band. Another very fond memory is meeting Mike and a couple other faithful parents at the bandroom at 4:00 AM on a Saturday morning to make the sauce from scratch. Mike didn't care for the bottled stuff and had a special recipe. Well, I will tell you, that sauce was something special and we always got comments that it was the best chicken they had ever had. In those early mornings, we would cook the sauce under a tailgating tent down by the practice field, while eating sausage biscuits, drinking coffee, and telling all sorts of tales.
My kids loved to get their Christmas tree from Mike. We would go over to the field and meet Mike there. He would load Megan and Lauren into the tractor-pulled trailer and pull them up the hill to find that perfect tree.
I've spent many hours around Mike when no-one else was ever around, and I can tell you this for sure. Mike was so very proud of Candace and Shannon. He would talk and talk about them and you could hear the love in his words and voice. He loved being a father and a husband.
Mike and Diane were a big part of our lives during those early band years at ACHS. My own two daughters literally grew up around them and when I was out doing all kinds of things with the kids, I knew they were having a good time with Mike and Diane. Wow, so many band trips and events! I could never begin to repay Mike Dixon for all he has done for me personally and for our program. I have many wonderful memories. And as for that "Big Dog", well, Mike is that Big Dog now! I take great comfort knowing that he, this day, is alive and well with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. I look forward to another chicken bbq with him someday.
