Obituary of Robert Darrell Campbell

Mr. Robert Darrell Campbell, age 82, of Jefferson passed away Friday morning, March 25, 2016 at Margate Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 11AM at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Cory Halsey and Rev. Doug Halsey officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 28, 2016 from 6-8pm at Boone Family funeral Home. Mr. Campbell was born in Ashe County on September 13, 1933 to Thomas Alexander Campbell and Maude Neaves Campbell. Mr. Campbell graduated from Healing Springs High School in 1951 and served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where he achieved the rank of Corporal. Following discharge, he attended Appalachian State University on the GI Bill, where he majored in mathematics and education. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Colleen Miller, on May 26, 1956. While attending college, Mr. Campbell also worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service along the Blue Ridge Parkway. After graduating from ASU in 1959, Mr. Campbell began his teaching career at East Surry High School in Pilot Mountain, NC where he taught for two years before returning to Ashe Central High School in 1962. He taught college prep math there until his retirement in 1988 and served as principal from 1967-1970. He was a kind and caring teacher who wanted his students to succeed. Mr. Campbell was active in local government serving initially as Alderman then Mayor of the Town of Jefferson for much of the 1980’s. Mr. Campbell was a member and deacon at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson where he taught Adult Sunday School for nearly forty years until declining health forced him to give this up last August. His faith came first and he loved serving his Savior. He battled heart disease for much of his life but his faith never wavered, and in 1998 he underwent a heart transplant. This procedure and the associated anti-rejection medications and biopsies were difficult, but gave him extra time with his family and the opportunity to witness the birth of his three granddaughters who he adored. Mr. Campbell enjoyed gardening, tree-farming, studying his Bible and preparing his Sunday school lessons, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Leona C. Phillips of West Jefferson, and June C. Denny of Maryland. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife; Colleen Miller Campbell, two sons; Dr. Chris Campbell and wife Heather of Jefferson, and Rob Campbell and wife Tricia of Purlear, one sister; Rose Miller of Winston Salem, three granddaughters; Molly, Madison, and Abigail Campbell, and several nieces and nephews also survive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, C/O Jean Burkett, PO Box 65, Jefferson, NC 28640.
