Thelma June, as we knew her, was my father's (Miles Powers)younger sister. She was his only sibling who remained in Ashe County, so it was to her house we traveled whenever we took my dad to NC. After the death of my mother, it was to June that I turned for advice on making apple butter and canning pears. She was the only one who kept up the family tradition of making apple butter the old fashion way, in a copper kettle over an open fire. In my father's last years, June rarely missed her Sunday phone calls to him. It was one of the high points of his week.
It is with sincere regret that my health prevents me from being there to honor her life and share in trying to comfort her family. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Timothy,
My prayers are with you more now than ever. You lost both of your greatgrandmothers within a month. I will always remember how you sit with me and held my hand when momma was so sick. This touched me in a way that is hard to put in words. It told me you really cared about my feelings, and spoke more than any words could ever do. Remember that I love you and anything I can do for you or mommy I will try to be there for you.

There are people that move through our lives and then there are people that come into our lives to stay. June was definitely one of the people that came into my life to stay.
I met June through her volunteer work with Girl Scouts. Her love for and dedication to girls in Ashe County was unsurpassed. For more than fifty years she helped girls realize their potential, develop leadership skills, achieve the organizations highest awards and helped girls believe in themselves. June preserved our traditions and served tirelessly in the organization in which she gave her heart and soul. She was a decorated volunteer, dedicated leader, invaluable mentor and a treasured friend.
I will miss her tremendously and send my sincerest sympathies to June's family.

I am sending my love and deepest sympathy for the loss of Aunt Thelma June. I am truly sorry that I cannot be with Rick, Cheryl, and Terry and their families. Bernard, she was so special to me, but my health is so bad so I apologize for not being with you at this time. I loved her very much. My last remembrance of her was seeing her at Daddy’s funeral and how good it felt when she gave me a big hug. God bless all of you.

I will miss being able to pick up the phone and calling my Aunt June to find out how the family is in North Carolina. Sometimes she would have a pretty bad cough and she used to jokingly say she had the "Silas Creek Crud" and it was going around. She was my father's (Miles Powers)little sister and he looked forward to talking to her every Sunday before he passed away. To Bernard, Ricky, Cheryl, and Terry cherish her memory and know that she loved you with all her heart.

I know that your hearts are broken now, but know, in your heart, how she is doing now.
There is no more pain or suffering. June isn't gone, she is just away and making preparations for the day when you all can join her in her new home. God will bless and keep you in his love. Love , Kathy

Mamaw,
Two years have gone by without you now. I still look for you. I miss you so much, and Timothy does, too. Everyone says that time heals wounds, but I'm not so sure. My pain is still there. At least I can say that I was the last one to hold you as God called you home.
Love ya!
