Obituary of Thelma June Sexton

Mrs. Thelma June Sexton, age 71, of Lansing passed away Monday morning, June 1, 2009 at her residence. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 11:00am at the Landmark Baptist Church with Brother Tommy Worth, Rev. Robert Roark and Rev. Ambrose Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Sexton Family Cemetery in Lansing. The body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00am, one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00pm on Wednesday at Boone Family Funeral Home. Mrs. Sexton was born in Ashe County on Thursday, June 17, 1937 to the late Joseph Oscar and Mary Magdalene Adams Powers. Thelma enjoyed gardening and loved helping with the Girl Scouts which she done for over fifty years. Mrs. Sexton was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Lansing Fire Dept. Thelma and her husband, "Bernard" was married for almost fifty-seven years. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Miles Powers and one sister, Glenry Roberts. She is survived by her husband, John "Bernard" Sexton; two sons, Rick Sexton of Lansing, Terry Sexton and wife, Debbie of Warrensville; one daughter, Cheryl Roark and husband, Robert of Lansing; three grandchildren, Michael Sexton, Chrystal Hartzog, Catherine Sexton; one great grandson, Timothy Hartzog; one step-grandson, Steve Miller and several nieces and nephews also survive.
