I have told this story to many through the years. I will never forget the act of kindness that Mr Roten showed me. My girlfriend at the time (Nancy) now wife wanted to buy some land. We were both very young, i believe 20 or so and completely clueless about how to make such a purchase. Mr Roten taught high School with my dad Bob Coffey but went out of his way to help us in this land purchase decision. He made is easy but the one thing he did that I will never forget is that he cut his fee in half for us.
I have never forgotten his act of kindness for a couple of kids just starting out.
He was loved by all he touched and he touched a lot of lives.
I just wanted to share with you what his kindness meant to me.

I had Mr. Roten for Geometry and other classes in the 70"s at Watauga High School . He was always a likable fellow and a good teacher.

Cecelia, Cara, Ivan and families... I was so sorry to just see Carl's obituary in the Democrat. I guess I last saw you for the 2016 election in Deep Gap, and you both always had ready smiles. I also remember him as a benevolent teacher from WHS (or at least I was never the subject of any disciplinary activity!)
I'm sorry, I won't be able to attend the services. No matter the circumstances or age, the finality of death is hard for those left behind, and you will be in my thoughts in the days to come.

Blessings to all the family and friends of Carl Roten. A really good man with integrity and a wonderful sense of humor. You will be missed Uncle Carl and although I didn't get to see you much as I live in California, I cherish my memories of visits from when I was a child to our most recent visit last October. There is certainly a void knowing you have left this physical world but comfort in believing you are at peace. ♥️
