Todd and Peck,
I just found out about your Mom's passing. It breaks my heart to get this information. My Mom, Bobbie Smith or Marie Smith , Loved your Mom so much. Mom felt like your Mom was her sister. I am not going to tell Mom because it would destory her. Once again my deepest sympathy. The world will not be as bright for me and my mother without her.

This is the story of a lifelong friendship. I first met Virginia Ruth Price Roberts 81 years ago when I was 5 and she was 6. Together we attended 6 years of elementary school and 1 of high school at Riverview and were roommates for a year at Meredith College. I always called her Ginger, short for Virginia. I thought she must have been born "happy," because of her sunny disposition. We were firm friends from our meeting to the day of her death, but we weren't equals -- she was big and I was little, plus she was happy and I was sometimes a little less than happy. I was jealous of her because she could do so many things well in which I was less than gifted. She had a knack for sewing and making button holes that I couldn't match. She would present a dress she had made that was beautiful inside and outside, especially button holes, while the dress I had made looked a little frayed from seams being pulled out and resewed. My jealousy turned to admiration at the skills she had and I couldn't seem to acquire. She was generous in sharing her knowhow with me. She and I and my cousin and friend Mary Elizabeth Latham frequently spent the night at each other's homes. In addition to her sunny temperament, Ginger knew how to be a friend and to smooth over ruffled feelings in our school days. She had so many of the qualities that contribute to a life well lived that I would run out of space if I tried to list them. A few years ago we spent considerable time together working to discover more about our genealogies along with another life-long friend Wylene Roten Graybeal. The three of us were astonished to realize that we were all cousins of some degree. Ginger's later life was centered on her love of family, especially of her husband Thomas whose passing some years ago was a painful loss to her. Our family responsibilities kept us further apart than either of us would have liked, but we continued to keep in touch. We loved each other and we were warmed by our memories of our younger days. Everyone should have a "Ginger" in their lives to gladden their existence. I'm glad to say that I did and that I cannot say enough about how she brightened and strengthened my path. I am buoyed by the fact that our bond continued no matter what our circumstances in life -- and that bond remains even in the face of death.

Dear Todd and family,
I was shocked to hear about your mother, grandmother. When you helped me at the Christmas tree, we marveled at how well she was doing and her looking forward to Christmas after cooking Thanksgiving dinner. You can remember her that way and know she's with your dad, grandpa.
Virginia Ruth was a true southern lady. I too remember her always smiling. She was so kind and patient when she'd come to the pharmacy. She would always ask about my parents. Even when your dad was sick, she had an amazing optimism that must have come from a strong faith.
Know that she was so proud of everyone in her family. She would tell me about everyone's accomplishments. She loved you all so much.
I hope that happy memories will bring you peace.

My thoughts and prayers with your family. I met Ms. Virginia at the funeral of my grandmother Eula Lewis. She shared wonderful memories with me of her and my mother Iva Dean Lewis. Since that event we have exchanged Christmas cards each year and she even found old pictures of my mother and sent them to me.
She was an exceptional lady and I will dearly miss her Christmas cards.
She is dancing with the angels and smiling down on all of you.

Virginia Ruth was such a wonderful lady in so many ways. She never failed to wear that big smile no matter where you saw her. She loved her family immensely and was so very proud of each of them and their many accomplishments. I enjoyed my visits with her this summer sitting by the river. She talked about her travels out west, the beach, as always her family tree, how she missed Tom and didn't want to go anywhere without him. What an honor to have known her,a true joy.

Virginia was a fine lady. She went to school with my husband and they became lifetime friends. When he would come home after being away in the Army... she would make a point to see him and show her appreciation for his service. I will miss seeing her around in the community. Prayers are with each of you as you continue to celebrate her life.

Mrs. Roberts was my "home-ec" teacher from 1961-65. She was my favorite teacher and I learned many things that helped me through life as a work/stay-at-home mom and grandmother. Even in her retirement years, when our paths would cross, she was always interested in what I was doing and had a positive outlook and attitude. She continued to be involved in community service and activities for many years. She will be missed by many in the Riverview community and those of us who are in many other parts of the state and country. It is with heavy heart that I write this note. I wish I could be with you today. If the weather was better I would love to be there and share in remembering Sweet Virginia Roberts. I did my student teaching under Mrs Roberts in 1978 at Northwest Ashe. I am lucky that I got to work under her watch eye. Mrs. Roberts was one of the most positive influences on my life. I loved her. I never heard a negative word from her. She was always encouraging me to be my best. She was a wonderful mentor to me and so many students. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts came to Greensboro for years for New Years Eve Parties at the Four Seasons. Doug and I met she and Thomas for breakfast on New Years Day several times. After they stopped traveling to Greensboro she started calling on New Years Day to catch up with each other. I will miss that phone call from this sweet Southern Belle! So long dear friend until we meet again!!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I had “Mrs. Roberts” for commercial foods in 1987-88. She was such a great influence in my life and she taught me many lessons that had nothing to do with cooking. She taught me how to be a better human being and she taught me to follow my dreams. She always challenged us to do what was right and be what we can be. Her smile and laugh were contagious and she made her students feel loved. She was more than a teacher. She molded people with her influence and presence. I am a better person for knowing her. God bless you all as you drive this remarkable lady.

Peck, Todd and family,
Mrs. Roberts spread sunshine wherever she went. Whether that be in the classroom, local eatery, local store or wherever. She always took time for a hug and to catch up. Her Christian love was so evident by her happiness and joy. She will be missed by many.
I remember her telling our Home Economics class about being born on Christmas Eve. Her brother pulled her off the bed on Christmas morning, thinking she was a doll. He will surely be happy to see his baby sister this Christmas morning, as will Tom, my Aunt Lena Mae and many more.
May God be with you all.
