I met "Uncle Edwin" in 1973 after I married his nephew, Craig. Always a gentleman and always had a smile on his face. He treated me like one of his family from the very beginning. I have a special place in my heart for him. I will miss him forever.

I have always and always will love and be greatful to my Uncle Edwin. He was a tremendous role model and mentor to me in my childhood years at a time when I most needed it. I had the pleasure of spending summers at my grandparents house in West Jefferson. Nita, Edwin, Alice and Rick lived there also. They all treated me like I was Alice and Rick’s brother, not just a nephew and cousin. My other four terrific uncles were also positive influences in my life. Edwin was foremost because I saw him every day for three months each summer. I was always included in the Houck family activities and outings. Edwin taught me many valuable life lessons and a great deal of practical knowledge. He taught me how to shoot a 22 rifle and hit what I aimed at. He took me frog hunting at night several times. We would shine a flashlight on them and then shoot being careful not to hit the legs. Mama Cook always fried them up for us. I will cherish my great memories of Uncle Edwin forever and will miss our conversations about Duke basketball. He was the one who got me interested in Duke and a huge fan of their sports at a very young age.

Alice and family, I’m so sorry to know that your Dad has passed. I send my heartfelt sympathy to you, sweet friend. I’ve walked this path before you and I know how difficult it is.
